I loved this second chance romance. I instantly developed a connection with the Hero and Heroine. I adored them as individuals but even more as a couple. This was the first book that I have read from this author, it won’t be the last.
Damian’s life drastically changed when he was only 5 years old. His dad left, and his mother turned into someone truly awful. She manipulated, abused, and neglected him. Damian reminded her of his father, a painful reminder
“He took the best years of my life and left me with you. He’s a monster, a fucking devil, and you are just like him. His evil little spawn.”
When he was in high school, he finally let his walls down and became friends with Cam Ahern. He started spending most evenings with Cam’s warm, loving family. Cam’s family saw the sadness in Damian, but they also saw the good. Cam’s twin sister Thea caught his eye immediately. Except he didn’t think he was good enough for this beautiful girl. He and Thea developed a friendship. The more time they spent together, the harder it was for them to resist the connection they had. He was her first kiss, first lover, and first love. Their love was so real and genuine, but they both knew it wasn’t going to last. They both had different plans after high school. He was enlisting, for the chance to be someone good, he wasn’t going to get that being around his mother.
“I loved her, but I had to let her go. I wanted to be better for her and me and to do that I had to leave, even when everything in me wanted to stay.”
“You’re not alone, Damian. You’ll never be alone again and you are loved…so much. Please be safe, be happy and until I can see you again know my heart is with you because you own it.”
Damian made the decision that he didn’t want them to keep in touch. He didn’t want Thea to wait on him. I’ll admit seeing this decision play out over the years made me want to strangle them both. I felt like some of the time span they let pass by was unnecessary.
“I wrote to you.” If I thought his muscles were rigid before, they were like rock now and his inhale sounded painful.”
“You told me not to, but I did. Every day, still do. Some were just telling you what I was doing or what I had to eat that day and others…I never mailed them. I have them, all of them.”
When danger brought Damian back into Thea’s life, I found myself wanting them to pick up right where they left off. I can say now that it was so much better they didn’t. They need to get to know each other again. Tate was strong, fun, and feisty. Tate was very prescient trying to break down Damian’s walls again. I smiled each time she started rambling, she was too cute. Damian was loyal and very protective over Tate. He loved her, she was his everything. I loved them together. Their love was sweet, and the sex was hot!
“To offer her a blanket and my body when she watches a scary movie. To hold her hair when she is sick and to supply the water when she drinks. To keep the house stocked with cookie ingredients and working fire extinguishers. To make her eggs and bacon and two cups of black coffee with two sugars every morning. To fall asleep next to her every night and to wake to her beautiful face every morning. To plant my babies in her, to build a life and family with her, to grow old with her…watching as life etches itself on her face. My intention, Cam, is to spend the rest of my life with her.”
I really enjoyed all of the other characters and can’t wait for some of their books.
